What is definition of Preposition?

definition of Preposition: A Preposition is a word which generally precedes a noun or pronoun and expresses a relation between the noun or pronoun and other words or elements in the sentence.

Note: Sometimes , Prepositions are placed at the end of the sentence and not before a noun/Pronoun.

Important Preposition for Exam and preposition usage

preposition usage of UP & Above

“UP” is used to talk about a higher position or a movement to a higher position.

preposition examples- He followed his teacher up the stairs.

However “Above” is used to denote a higher position or level.

preposition examples-His marks are above 85%.

use of On & Over

“On” is used to denote the position of something which is in position above something else and is touching it.

preposition examples- This book is on the Table.

Note: ”On” is used before a “day”or “date”.

preposition examples- On Monday, On Sunday, on 26th Jan 1950.

If there is an article before a means of Transport, ”On” is used.

preposition examples- On a bus/train/cycle/scooter.

However “Over” is used to denote the position of something which is above something else and is covering it.

preposition usage of Down & Below

” Down” is used to denote a lower position, from a higher one.

However “Below” means in a lower position(than).

preposition usage of Beneath & Under

“Beneath” means directly underneath something.

However “Under ” is used to denote a position of something which is below something else and is often covered by it.

preposition usage of Between, Among & Amongst

“Between”is used to denote the space between two separate places, people or objects.

preposition examples- My car is parked between a bus and a truck.

However Among means in the middle of a number of things. Among is used before Consonant.

But “Amongst” is used before a Vowel sound.

preposition usage of Beside, Besides & Except

“Beside” means ” next to”.

preposition examples- Go and sit beside her.

However “Besides” means “in addition to”.

“Except” means ‘a part from’.

preposition usage of For and Since

“For”is used to denote period of time.

preposition examples- I have been sleeping for four Hours.

For is also used to denote purpose

preposition examples- These seats are reserved for ladies only.

However “Since” is used to denote a ‘a point of time’.

preposition examples- I have been sleeping since 4pm.

‘Since’ is also used to denote Reason.

preposition usage of Across and Through

“Across” means from one side to the other of something with clear boundaries.

preposition examples-

  1. Across a Road.
  2. Across a Bridge.

However “Through” is used to Indicate the Movement from one end to the other.

Ex- They ran swiftly over woods.

preposition On/ Upon

“On” is used to denote the position of something, which is in a position above something and is touching it.

preposition examples- My Pen is on the bed.

On denotes Position.

Difference between Upon, Onto and In

“Upon” is used to denote ‘on’ in a more formal term, especially in Abstract Senses.

“Onto” is used to Indicate movement Into or on a particular place.

preposition onto Ex- She slipped as she stepped onto the floor.

Note: Upon and Onto are used to Denote Motion.

 “In” is used to denote the position of something which is Surrounded or closed off by something.

preposition in Ex- Neelam is in the room.

preposition Into/ Within

“Into” is used to denote movement Inside or Middle of something.

preposition into Ex- Go into the bed.

“Within” is used to denote time or position which is inside the range or limits of a particular period of time or distance.

Ex- I will complete the work within 2 hours.
